KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Florida, September 15, 2022 (CASIS PR) – The International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory today released a new research announcement soliciting flight concepts for “technological advancement and applied research leveraging the ISS National Laboratory.” This solicitation is for flight projects in the areas of applied research and development, translational medicine, technology readiness maturation, and technology demonstration.
The development and demonstration of space technologies is a strategic priority for the ISS National Laboratory, as it provides an opportunity for accelerated technology maturation that can enable advances that improve life on Earth and expand commerce in low Earth orbit. Through this Research Announcement, Offerors may offer to use the unique environment of the ISS to develop, test, or mature products and processes that have demonstrated potential to produce positive direct or indirect economic impact in the short term. term.
Specifically, the focus will be on proposals for testing and spatial qualification of hardware prototypes and process improvements, such as (but not limited to):
- Hardware Prototype Testing: Innovations filling gaps in hardware product development and the proliferation of emerging technologies in computing, electronics, nanotechnology, robotics, sensors, communications, remote sensing and satellite technology.
- Process improvements: using the ISS as a test bed to advance the development of facilities for high-throughput surveys, using space data to facilitate the modeling of industrial systems, or demonstrating new methodologies for research and development of spaceflight.
- Advanced Materials: Current advanced materials research that focuses on developing next-generation production methods, testing new materials, and exploiting materials with unique properties.
- Translational medicine: validation of accelerated disease modeling, analysis of macromolecular structures for drug design, and demonstration of new drug delivery and diagnostic services.
For example, a Madison Square Garden (MSG) Entertainment Corp. awarded under a previous ISS National Laboratory research announcement focused on technological advancement will be launched to the space station on an upcoming NASA Commercial Resupply Services mission. The company will take advantage of the space station to test a new ultra-wide lens on its highest-resolution single-sensor camera in the harsh conditions of space. Data collected during this demonstration will help shape the design and settings of a new, higher resolution custom camera designed and built by MSG Entertainment Corp. to capture images of the space station and Earth on future missions. Images from these future missions will light up the LED screens inside the new MSG Sphere in Las Vegas, for an immersive experience.
This research announcement will follow a two-step proposal submission process. Before being invited to submit a full proposal, all interested researchers must submit a Stage 1: Concept Summary for consideration. The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, Inc. (CASIS), responsible for the ISS National Laboratory, will host a webinar on September 27, 2022 at 1 p.m. EDT to discuss ISS facilities and capabilities associated with this search ad. Stage 1: Concept summaries are due by end of day January 10, 2023. Stage 2: Full proposals (of those invited to submit) will be due by end of day March 15, 2023.
Flight concepts selected through this research announcement may receive funding to enable mission integration and operations support for projects to be implemented on the ISS.
